Hey r/gnome, Adding custom locations with arbitrary GPS coordinates to GNOME Weather can be annoying because libgweather-4 requires a specific GVariant format in gsettings. I wrote a short Bash script that automates this. None of the legacy Email clients on Linux are satisfactory using the excellent Apple Mail as a benchmark. And none of them use GTK4. There's Stamp but it's still in early development and crashes after a bit on my machine. In the past few months there have been 2 new Gnome-first GTK4 Email Clients launched (one begins with V and the other begins with P). Testing one right now with a burner email account....it's very good. Feels more Gnome-y than anything I've used before. It uses GTK4 in innovative ways that I haven't seen before (better than Stamp in fact). I don't want to wait 1+ years for Stamp to be stable. Yet I can't mention the name of this Gnome-native App here, as the code was generated with LLMs. (Then compiled by me using libgtk4-devel and libadwaita-devel - told you it was native!). Hello! I got myself a new laptop. The economy is bad, so it had to be a 1200p 16inch, instead of a 3k one. And after booting to GNOME I realized that text looks really bad in it, the way it did not look before. My eyes are hurting. I managed to at least enable sub-pixel rendering in Firefox and that fixes most of my issues. However it is a shame that the system text needs to look poor. For those interested, here is the flag which needs to be set to true in Firefox: gfx.webrender.quality.force-subpixel-aa-where-possible Can we expect to see sub-pixel antialiasing back at some point in the future? I only used XFCE for 10 years and i really am not sure about how gnome or kde works. I am trying to decide between GNOME and KDE Plasma for a Linux laptop that I want to use alongside a MacBook. I care about making the workflow and behaviour similar enough that switching between Linux and macOS does not constantly fight my muscle memory. The most important things for me are: Mac-like touchpad gestures, especially switching workspaces and opening an overview Hot corners An Exposé/Mission Control-like window overview Predictable virtual desktops and workspace behaviour A top panel and dock Smooth Wayland gestures and animations GNOME appears structurally closer to macOS because of its overview, workspaces, gestures, and relatively unified design. However, getting features such as a persistent dock, desktop icons, extra panel behaviour, and deeper customization seems to require several extensions. KDE Plasma seems capable of reproducing the visual layout more closely and offers far more built-in customization. What I do not know is whether its touchpad gestures, workspace handling, overview, hot corners, and general workflow can feel as coherent and Mac-like as GNOME, rather than merely looking similar in screenshots. For people who have seriously used or customized both: Which one can reproduce macOS behaviour more closely? Can KDE’s touchpad gestures be configured to closely match macOS without fragile scripts or obscure workarounds? Does relying on GNOME extensions become annoying or unreliable after major updates? Which desktop is easier to maintain as a daily driver after heavily customizing it? Are there important macOS behaviours that neither desktop can reproduce properly? After making this post: https://www.reddit.com/r/debian/comments/1vej7dk/comment/p1ptz50/?context=1 I tried KDE Plasma for a couple of days and it just does NOT click with me. So, I was determined to return back to Gnome and match the performance I got on KDE. Turns out I just needed to turn scaling on my display down to 100%, so I feel very silly. Anyway, coming back to a fresh install of Debian Stable, I've decided to run Gnome with no extensions, just as the gnome-gods intended. I gotta say, it's pretty nice and pretty quiet. I'm not even using any themes, fonts, icons, etc. Just booted up, installed my apps, and back to work I went. I love it and might just run it like this forever, really. Ok, that's all. Minecraft 26.2 and 26.3 Snapshot 7 I have noticed that the newest snapshots/development releases of Minecraft no longer use GNOME's window decoration, but rather a different window decoration with square corners and all 3 window control buttons. I have observed this same behaviour on an older version of Minecraft while using the VulkanMod mod to enable Vulkan support. This window decoration can be observed in the latest official snapshots (I have tested 26.3 snapshots 5, 6 and 7). It does not depend on the selected graphics API. I tried searching online, but could not find anything regarding this window decoration. Does anybody know what might be causing this? Could there be a fix on my end, or could I customize/replace those window bars to be more consistent with GNOME? Or perhaps this is a snapshot thing and will be before in the final release?
