Hey :). Thank you for your good work on GNOME, I've used it since version 3.4 and really love it. I've got two questions about the upcoming 51 release. First of all, the release notes mention "removed support for legacy NVIDIA driver interfaces". I'm still using the old proprietary drivers, because I'm on GTX 970 (Maxwell), which still works absolutely fine for my purposes. I've considered upgrading to one of the Intel Arc cards, but I'd rather keep the money for other expenses. When CachyOS adopts 51, am I gonna reboot into a broken desktop? The other question is Maps. Amazing app BTW, I really wish there was an Android build, as I genuinely like it more than Organic Maps, the UI is just so much better and it has public transport support for my city. I already have Maps 51, because I get it from Flathub. It's supposed to have offline map support, but I have no idea how to download the offline maps. What should I do to download maps for my area? The feature doesn't seem very discoverable unfortunately. Sorry for going off on tangents a little bit, I'm just excited :P. EDIT Sorry, I'm stupid. Hello Gnome devs/users, I am looking to buy a high refresh (120+ Hz) and hi-dpi monitor to use with the Gnome desktop. What monitor sizes and resolutions should I get such that the UI elements display exactly how the Gnome developers intended to? Context: I am currently running a 24inch 4K (185ppi) Viewedge monitor at 200% scaling. The main problem I have is that it's limited to 60Hz and after getting used to phones running at 120Hz, it is starting to feel rather sluggish. Finding a 24inch 4k monitor that is also high refresh is next to impossible at the moment (even finding my current one has been a pain). I also find the UI to be very slightly bigger than I would like. I assume this might be since Gnome is designed to run at 192dpi like windows? I've been building an icon theme that stays consistent with GNOME's look but adds a soft frosted-glass depth. Some things I cared about: - File types that say what they are. JSON, Markdown, lock files, certificates, Dockerfiles, YAML, each has its own symbol, and from 48 px a small type label. - Top-bar status icons redrawn on the pixel grid (volume, mic that turns orange while in use, battery marks), still symbolic so the shell recolours them. - No brand logos. Papirus is the fallback for everything I haven't drawn. - An optional per-user MIME add-on, because GNOME types .ts as a Qt translation file and go.mod as a music module :) Before/after vs Yaru and the install one-liner are in the README: https://github.com/thissayantan/frost-icon-theme MIT licensed. Sorry if this is harsh but there's no other way to put it cause it just is. No shortcut to comment or uncomment multiple lines, which is essential for shell scripts - probably the main use case for this thing. Find is broken. Hi, I opened a PDF document and used the "Edit" menu in the lower right of the application to add some text and circle some boxes in the PDF. When I save and reopen, I can still see these edits, but when I try to print from this app or any other all the edits disappear. Is this a known issue with this app and is there some way to print the document with the edits? I have cachyos and switched from KDE where I had no problems to Gnome. When I start a game through Heroic it stays in the dock and there is no way to open it in full screen. However, if I hover the mouse over it from the preview, I can see that it is playing correctly, including audio. I've been using fedora workstation for the last 5 years or so, and outside of a few niggles it's been great, especially with touchscreen devices, the flexibility is awesome. One of the annoying behaviours that still remains from when I first moved from Mint is anytime I start an app with a keyboard shortcut, or click an email notification, I get "app is ready" instead of the window stealing focus. I've looked at blogposts, reddit threads, so on, but nothing recent seems to come up for me, outside of one-shot gnome extensions. Is it that nobody cares, and I'm the only person it still bothers, or that people have accepted the behaviour, or is there a quick solution people find before they post, that I've not yet come across ? WordWrap - fix text typed in the wrong keyboard layout on GNOME Wayland (a manual Punto Switcher / xneur alternative) If you type in two layouts you know the moment: a whole sentence is on screen and it reads `ghbdtn? rfr ltkf&`. Punto Switcher did this on Windows, xneur on X11. Neither exists for GNOME on Wayland, because Wayland does not let apps watch input or see the active window. WordWrap is a small Python tray app that does one thing: select the mistyped text, press Ctrl+F1, the text is rewritten through the other layout and the system layout switches to match. It is manual on purpose - it never watches what you type and never guesses. Direction comes from the text itself (Cyrillic in the selection means "to Latin", and vice versa). How it survives Wayland: - hotkeys via evdev (user in the `input` group), events are not grabbed - selection is read by putting a private marker in the clipboard, sending Ctrl+Insert through uinput and polling wl-paste until the marker changes - result is pasted back via clipboard + synthetic Ctrl+V (wtype does not work on Mutter) - layout switch: `gsettings ... current` is ignored by GNOME 46 in a live session, the real state is `mru-sources`, so it presses the GNOME switch-input-source shortcut through uinput until the state matches Built in: en<->ru, en<->uk, custom maps are a JSON file. Terminal mode with Ctrl+Shift+V. Bilingual UI (en/ru). GPL-3.0. Limits: GNOME Wayland only (tested on Ubuntu 24.04, GNOME 46). No active-window detection, so do not press it in a password field. So I've come back to Gnome and then I found this 'GNOME Web', not Firefox. I got interested in it so I tried to know what is based on. I tried accessing about:config(gecko/Firefox) and chrome://dino, but both didn't hit. After some research, I found that the answer was WebKit, which is used in Safari. Look at the second picture.
