Yeah so I have a thinkpad p53 with intel i7-9850H and an nvidia Quadro T2000 mobile gpu. Hey everyone, I guess standard protocol dictates I start this by saying: I use Arch, btw. Now that we’ve got the obligation out of the way, I was sitting here tweaking my config and realized it’s officially been over three years since I fully committed to the Arch life. What started as a late-night rabbit hole of "let me just see if I can complete the manual install" turned into a complete takeover of my home network. At this point, I’m running it across a few pretty distinct setups: Self-Hosted Server: I flipped a spare machine into a dedicated headless Arch server. It hosts pretty much my entire digital life—Immich for photos, Paperless-ngx for documents, and the full *arr stack running smoothly in Docker. Rolling updates on a server used to make me nervous, but with a solid setup and periodic snapshots, it’s been rock solid. Having total control over every single package running on my home network is a high you just can't get anywhere else. The Daily / Gaming PC: My main rig runs Arch + KDE Plasma. I do a ton of gaming on it, mostly relying on Steam coupled with a dedicated gamescope session for that seamless, console-like experience when I want to lean back. For work stuff that strictly demands Windows, I just spin up a Windows VM with full GPU passthrough—best of both worlds, zero bloat on the bare metal. The Unfortunate Reality Check (Dual Boot): That said, I did recently have to commit what felt like a minor sin. I had to take a Pearson test for a certification, and their anti-cheat/monitoring software only runs on bare-metal Windows or Mac. Spinning up a VM was a immediate non-starter with their software, so I was forced to shrink my partition and actually dual-boot Windows onto actual hardware. Installing Windows directly on my machine again made me physically sick, but hey... a guy's gotta get certified. Immediate reboot back into Arch the second the test was over. It’s been an incredible journey going from initial installation anxiety to treating my system like a fine-tuned machine. Every time something breaks, fixing it actually teaches me something useful rather than just driving me nuts. I’m curious how the rest of the community is using Arch these days. Are you keeping it minimal with a tiling window manager like Hyprland or i3? Running it on a server, laptop, or Steam Deck? A couple months ago I posted CypherGate, a Linux-first VPNGate client I was building for my own Arch setup. Since then, it has gone through a few releases and became a much more complete Linux desktop application. The original goal was simple: Make VPNGate usable without manually downloading configs, fixing OpenVPN settings, and fighting the terminal every time. I'm new to arch just downloaded it yesterday but steam seams to want to sit around 100mb/s when I should be getting 500mb/s online speed tests can hit that number and so did my windows install before I installed arch I found some solutions online that included included this steam_dev.cfg and increasing my download cache but neither of those solutions worked for me submitted by /u/GetTheKness69 [link] [comments]

Right now my GTX 1050 card does not allow 32 bit games to use it and has defaulted back to software rendering or chashed on startup. (tested halflife 2, portal 1 and portal 2 but other games work fine) I installed the package "nvidia-580xx-dkms" from the AUR. got a new system, and decided to install arch, I am slowly installing things, but discord refuses to launch. I have a nvidia, gtx 1660 card and using sway+wayland as my windowmanager I get the traditional starting animation, but nothing happens after that, it is stuck there... in one of the cases, i got segmentation fault once, but didnt see it other time arch wiki suggetd to install libva-nvidia-driver , not sure what the correct command for it was, but i did sudo pacman -S libva-nvidia-driver submitted by /u/betaINK [link] [comments]

So im using network manager and as soon as arch was finally installed without the DVD wifi won't work. At home I would connect to the internet but pinging google.com OR 8.8.8.8 wouldn't work at all. I'm at a new place and the SSID I want to connect to sometimes shows up under nmcli dev wifi and sometimes doesn't, but either way, if I try to connect I get "Connection activation failed: The Wi-Fi network could not be found." submitted by /u/Apprehensive-Tax-3 [link] [comments]

I ordered a new keyboard just to install arch and now? THE ISO DOESN'T WORK. The option is stuck at Memtest86+ and does not recognize the up arrow keys AT ALL. This is NOT a keyboard problem because I tested it with the keyboard that came with the notebook and the other keyboard. Hey guys I've been using Arch Linux over 2 years on my dell laptop and everything was working fine but from few days the wifi device (Qualcomm Atheros QCA9565 / AR9565 Wireless Network Adapter (rev 01)) and i can set it up again unless i reboot my system, and i noticed the system bacome heavy and a bit laggy when navigating and writing, e.g. when i try to write something like (sudo) it writes suuuuuddddoooo, and i could not figure it out which pissed me off because this the first time i have an issue and could not resolve it. I am a beginner. I started using arch 4-6 months ago. Previously I use windows. I formatted everything and installed linux on my laptop. But now due to university curriculum I need to use MATLAB and the version provided to us is only for windows(it does not even support mac) I have tried installing MATLAB, but it is not working properly. My previous laptop was an ASUS TUF Dash F15 (i7-11370H / 24GB / 960GB / Windows 11 / RTX 3050), but unfortunately, it got damaged, so I bought a new laptop from the same brand: the ASUS TUF Gaming A16 (Ryzen 7 260 / 16GB / 512GB / Windows 11 / RTX 5060). I chose it because my previous laptop worked so well with Linux — literally everything worked without any extra configuration. In particular, the USB-C port, which I could use to connect an external ASUS ZenScreen MB16AH monitor, and the keyboard backlight, which also worked flawlessly. I could easily adjust the screen brightness, even using the GNOME Quick Settings. However, on this new laptop, neither of these functions works. The keyboard backlight setting appears to be at the maximum level, yet the keyboard itself isn't lit up. I tried installing the linux-ogc kernel, but unfortunately, it didn't help. I still couldn't adjust or enable the backlight using asusctl. The same issue applies to connecting external displays. Everything worked instantly on my old laptop, but with this new one, I have no idea what to do because neither the USB-C nor HDMI port works. Before the actual Linux installation, I had used Windows 11 for a day, mostly out of curiosity and to download the Linux ISO file. During that time, the second monitor worked perfectly via USB-C. The HDMI port detected the display, but unfortunately, it produced no signal. I've run out of ideas and have pretty much lost hope of finding a solution. I'm so frustrated that I'm considering returning the laptop and exchanging it for a different model. However, I'm willing to give it one last chance if I can get these two issues resolved. It has been a few months since the issue first started so I don't recall all the initial details, but I updated my system after a long period of not using my computer and had an issue. To resolve the issue, I removed a package and my system then successfully updated. However only one display (out of two) will work (the one attached to the motherboard and not the one connected to the graphics card), and the resolution is wonky. I have tried restarting and updating. I cannot adjust the resolution and there are no options to switch to under the Display settings UI. I cannot remember what it was I removed but this is what I googled at the time from my search history: installing libfm (1.4.1-1) breaks dependency 'libfm=1.4.0' required by libfm-gtk2 I then accessed this page- https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=311606 The above may be unrelated to my issue but I wanted to lay out everything I did. I have since tried installing and updating the graphics card drivers. Fresh installation. Which AUR helper is best to install? I prioritize stability over performance. I've taken a look at both repos and paru's development seems to be somewhat less active. What do you guys reckon? Honestly there aren't many packages I need to install, namely anydesk and possibly a few others but nothing crazy, I like my systems lean.
